want_to_belongCharacter History: WikiPrevious AppCharacter Personality: The designated comic relief of the party, Prompto jokes and plays. He can be childish, doing things like performing kancho on Gladio and then running for his life. He adores his best friend Noctis and acts as his true friend, the one person who didn't care how much money or how many servants he had. Instead, he does normal things with him. Video games, comic books, and razzing the hell out of each other. He exaggerates in both manner and speech, and he does that because it's all partially a front.
He's reformed and has made his new personality part of himself, but in reality he grew up as a lonely, sad child with a weight problem and extreme anxiety issues, detached from his adopted parents. Despite losing the weight and gathering up the courage after many years of effort to talk to Noctis, he still doubts his own self-worth. He fears that one day the group will see him for who he really is and won't want him anymore.
Still, he loves the guys. They're pretty much his only friends. He wants to be with them, be a part of them, more than anything else. When Ignis is injured and Noctis and Gladio start fighting, Prompto is the one sticking close to Ignis' side and desperately trying to stop the infighting, even if he's a meek guy who doesn't know how to do it. He can be seen running over to Ignis to watch after him, or at times helping him get up when he falls.
Beyond the weight issues he dealt with as a kid, he also has a barcode tattooed on his wrist that he hates. He covers it up, and in Episode Prompto considers trying to burn it off. He dislikes that it makes him different and wants to feel like he's the same as the others. It's a little unclear how much he knew about it before Episode Prompto - in the episode it showed that Prompto did not know before that he was a clone. Regardless of how much he knew about what it was, he knew it designated him as an outsider. He was acutely aware that he did not belong.
Prompto is on the obsessive side and can be creepy about girls. He worked out for years to make himself 'good enough' to be Noctis' friend, all because he received a letter from Lunafreya asking him to be a good friend to Noctis. Needless to say, putting that amount of effort into becoming someone's friend is unusual, and there were probably a few things that fed into his obsession. He desperately wanted friends to begin with, and a girl had asked him to do it, and that managed to keep him motivated until he worked up the nerve to approach Noct.
His loneliness likely contributes to how creepy he can come off. He sniffs Luna's letter before carefully putting it away as a treasured item. He also does things like trying to take a picture of Cindy without her knowing. It's unlikely he's aware of his faux pas because when Noctis brings it up he immediately denies that he's, "like a stalker or something", and when Noctis asks why he doesn't just ask her for a picture, he replies, "No way! That would be creepy!" Noctis obviously knows that what Prompto's doing is weird, but Prompto is a mixture of unaware and too scared to approach Cindy. He gets tongue-tied around girls, admiring from a distance and fumbling whenever he tries to get close.
Prompto's feelings about his clone status are complicated. While he knew that he was an outsider as a child, Episode Prompto made it evident that he didn't know what was happening in Niflheim. This makes sense since he was taken away as an infant. He covered up the barcode because he knew it designated him as an outsider, but he likely had no idea about anything else.
Many times he expresses worries about 'not belonging', from the beginning when he talks to Noctis at a motel to Episode Prompto where he has a choice to try and burn off the barcode. Among other things, this likely contributed to many of his anxieties throughout his life. In Kingsglaive it's made apparent that people inside of the Crown City aren't always welcoming to outsiders. Prompto also grows up having no idea who his biological parents are, and isn't exceptionally attached to his almost never-present adopted parents. He's reclusive as a child, barely interacting with others. This lack of interaction can tie in with his seemingly creepy behavior later, where he doesn't act quite appropriately because of his lack of a social life as a child. He didn't even approach Noctis again after his first try until high school. That's a long time to be alone.
It's only when he decides to be Noctis' friend that he starts building up his confidence and finally starts talking to and greeting others a bit.
Even then, he's still a mess inside. The exercise doesn't magically make all of his fears disappear. In Episode Prompto, he reiterates his dread of not belonging. It's still with him even at 20 years old. It isn't until he talks to Aranea (or it might be better said that she gives him a stern talking to) and admits everything to the guys that he finally starts finding some peace with it. At that points he knows they'll accept him even if he has a barcode. It's safe to say his misgivings didn't vanish completely the second that happened, but he probably came to terms with it over time. (There isn't much time between him telling the guys about it and Noctis ending up in the crystal, and the ten year period after that isn't shown, so it has to be assumed a little bit).
Overall, he's a guy with a dual personality, laughing and playing on the outside and trying to fit in on the inside. He loves his friends deeply and he would do anything he could to take care of them.
CRAUPrompto ended up on the islands of Lifeaftr with Ignis, Noctis and Ardyn. Noctis came and went multiple times, and Gladio joined and then much later left, leaving Prompto clinging to Ignis as an anchor point. He did his best trying to survive, a skill he realized he was gravely lacking in when Gladio showed up, but scraped together everything he could manage for himself and the (then) recently blinded Ignis. After interacting with a variety of people from other worlds, he had a brief stint of experimenting with kissing with Mollymauk Tealeaf.
Prompto was much more reluctant to become close to Ardyn, though he never tried to stop Ignis or Gladio from doing what they wanted. Hearing that Noctis himself wanted to let Ardyn finally rest, he decided to support his team in helping Ardyn, though he's still uneasy and hasn't forgotten the things Ardyn has done.
During his stay, Gladio also tattooed a
crowned skull over his barcode, designating him a Lucian citizen rather than an outsider. It means a lot to him.
Powers and Abilities:・Prompto is a crack shot. It's never made clear why he's so good with guns when he didn't receive the life-long training that the rest of the group did. I headcanon that he liked to play arcade games that involved holding and aiming with physical (fake) guns.
・He loves photography and takes hundreds, if not thousands of pictures during their trip. He's fairly good with a camera. One of the skills he uses in combat is simply taking a picture.
The camera had a 50% of taking a distorted picture in Lifeaftr.
・He's a noted technophile. How much he can do is vague in the game. I wouldn't place him as "an elite hacker that can break into anything", but more as someone who has an affinity for technology and tends to be rather good with it. He's shown helping Noct with things on his cell-phone and such, and he also uses machinery as a weapon.
・While he didn't receive as much training as the others, he has been trained in combat for about a year. His moves are sloppier than Ignis and Gladio's and he uses a ranged weapon to stay back from the more intense fighting.
・Prompto is a runner. He started running to lose weight as a child and has become rather fit as a result. He could likely run for a good, long time.

Coco the amazing muddy brown chocobo (male): Prompto received a chocobo egg 12-07-2017 on Lifeaftr and raised him to adulthood. Prompto had currently been training the chocobo to carry a rider using makeshift chocobo gear they fashioned on the island.

Prince the amazing dark blue chocobo (male): Noctis received the chocobo egg from Gladio as a gift 12-19-2018. However, when he disappeared Prompto took charge of the hatchling and named it after his friend. The chocobo is still a fledgling.
